CMDR COE Internship Programme Spring 2027 in Bulgaria

CMDR COE Internship Programme at CMDR COE, Sofia Bulgaria

The Crisis Management and Disaster Response Centre of Excellence (CMDR COE) is offering two paid internships under its Spring regular call. Interns spend five months at the Centre in Sofia, Bulgaria — 1 February to 30 June — with a €600 monthly stipend that is exempt from tax.

Applications close on 15 November 2026, and everything is submitted by email. Each intern is matched with a mentor and works on a chosen research topic — this is a research role, not an office-assistant placement.

What the internship involves

The CMDR COE is a NATO-accredited Centre of Excellence based in Sofia, Bulgaria, within NATO’s network of Centres of Excellence. It runs training courses, research, and expert events on crisis management and disaster response for participants from many nations.

The call publishes the topics openly, so you know the work before applying. One mentor is available per topic group, and the Centre confirms the topics are not extra positions — only two paid places exist.

The research topics you can choose from

  • Wildfire Risk Management and Environmental Resilience
  • Network Governance and Public Sector Business Continuity
  • Manufactured Migration in Hybrid Warfare
  • Inter-Organisational Cooperation for Resilience in Crisis Management
  • Collaboration and Innovation for Crisis Management Capabilities
  • Governance of Collaborative Capability Development
  • Urban Infrastructure and Megacities in Modern Crisis Management
  • Public-Private Partnerships in Disaster Response
  • Social Media and Disinformation Simulation during Crises
  • Gamification in Crisis Management Training

Who can apply

Eligibility is strict and checked at screening. The key rule is citizenship: you must be a citizen of a NATO member state or partner nation. Exceptions are possible only case by case, with the Director’s approval.

  • Age: over 21 and up to 35 as of the start of the internship.
  • Education: enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s or PhD), in the final year of an undergraduate programme, or a recent graduate (within one year) — in a relevant field like political science, international relations, security studies, law, IT, or journalism.
  • English: English is the working language. You need proven proficiency at STANAG 3-3-3-3 level or a civilian upper-intermediate equivalent, with a certificate attached. Native English speakers are exempt.
  • Background: you must satisfy legal, background, and security requirements. You cannot be a first-degree relative of a CMDR COE staff member, and a criminal record (other than minor traffic violations) makes you ineligible.

Is this the right internship for you?

You are a strong fit if you meet the citizenship and age rules, can prove your English, can live in Sofia for five months, and enjoy research and writing. With only two positions, selection will be competitive.

Skip this call if you fall outside the citizenship rule or cannot document your English. Other paid international options here include the IMF Fund Internship Programme, the WTO Internship Programme in Geneva, and the Green Climate Fund Internship Programme.

Why this opportunity stands out

Most student internships mean office tasks. This one gives you a research question, a mentor, and five months inside a NATO-accredited centre that trains people from many countries. With an intake of only two, your work is visible, and a research output produced here carries weight with future employers or graduate schools.

The funding is stated honestly: a modest but tax-exempt €600 per month. One gap to note: the call says nothing about visa support or travel costs, so confirm those details with the Centre before you apply.

What your application must include

  • Cover letter (max one page): motivation, preferred topic(s), a short research proposal, and your expectations.
  • 1–3 recommendation letters: from an academic or professional institution.
  • CV, preferably in EUROPASS format: the European standard format used for fair comparison.
  • Diploma or proof of enrolment.
  • Proof of English proficiency.
  • Short essay (1–2 pages): on a call-listed topic related to the CMDR COE — your real audition.
  • Eligibility and security declarations.

How to apply

  1. Prepare the complete package — incomplete applications fail screening.
  2. Send it by email to office@cmdrcoe.org.
  3. In the subject line, write “Internship application” followed by your first and last name.
  4. Submit before 15 November 2026.

What happens after you apply

Selection has three stages: eligibility screening and shortlisting, interviews, then final selection and notification. Final acceptance also depends on a mentor match and available resources — choose your topic thoughtfully.

How to make your application stronger

The essay and the research proposal decide this call. Read a recent CMDR COE publication on your chosen topic so your essay speaks the Centre’s language — crisis prevention, resilience, and practical response. Keep the cover letter to one page: name your topic, say why it matters, and connect it to work you have actually done. Brief your referees on your chosen topic, use the exact subject-line format, attach every document, and proofread your English — language quality is part of the assessment.
