Yale World Fellows Program: Four Fully Funded Months at Yale for Global Leaders

Yale World Fellows Program at Yale University, New Haven USA

The Yale World Fellows Program — officially the Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program — offers a four-month, fully funded stay at Yale University, from mid-August to mid-December, for mid-career leaders from outside the United States.

Fellows join seminars, audit classes, give talks, mentor students, and build a global network. The program covers a living stipend, a furnished apartment, medical insurance, and round-trip travel.

But the Yale World Fellows Program is not for everyone — read on to decide honestly whether you should apply.

Check yourself first: do you actually qualify?

The Yale World Fellows Program is strict about three things.

First, citizenship. You must be a citizen of a country other than the United States. Dual US citizens may apply, but strong preference goes to work focused outside the US.

Second, career stage: five to twenty-five years into your career, with real achievements at regional, national, or international level. The average fellow is 39, and the youngest ever accepted was 27. There is no official age limit.

Third, occupation. This is for practitioners, not students or full-time academics. If you are enrolled in a degree, or your main job is university teaching and research, apply to Yale’s academic departments instead.

You should probably not apply if:

  • You are a US citizen, or your work is mainly US-focused
  • You are a full-time student or a full-time academic
  • You have fewer than five years of professional experience
  • You cannot live in New Haven full-time from mid-August to mid-December

Honesty here saves the $20 fee and hours of work.

What the Yale World Fellows Program pays for

The package has four parts: a taxable living stipend for New Haven, a modest furnished one- or two-bedroom apartment, medical insurance, and round-trip travel from your home country.

A few honest notes. “Taxable” means the stipend counts as income under US tax rules, so you keep less than the headline figure. The apartment is “modest” — comfortable, not luxury. The page states no exact stipend amount, so ignore figures quoted by third-party sites.

What four months at Yale really look like

Fellows are not tourists. The program is full-time and demanding.

Weekly seminars anchor the program. In “Good Society” sessions, fellows present their vision for a better world and their own work. In “Salon” sessions, they host distinguished guests and debate big topics.

Fellows get individual and group coaching, can audit many of Yale’s 2,000+ courses, and work on personal, group, or independent research projects.

They give talks and panels across campus, and each fellow mentors Yale student volunteers.

Then there is the network: your cohort plus more than 450 former fellows in over 100 countries. Many alumni call this the most valuable part of all.

Your application, piece by piece

Everything happens online — no paper forms.

You will need:

  • A résumé or CV of maximum 3 pages
  • A personal statement of maximum 600 words
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A brief video statement, recorded inside the application platform itself
  • The $20 application fee

Request recommendation letters early — the system must receive them before the deadline.

The video needs care: no uploads or links — record inside the platform on a computer with Chrome or Firefox. One re-record only; then it locks.

The office cannot provide technical support. If something breaks, try a different computer or browser — that solves most issues.

How to make each piece stronger

Admission is highly competitive — thousands apply for a small number of places. Each document must earn its space.

Your 600-word statement is short. Skip your life story. State what change you are working toward, what you have achieved, and what you would do with four months at Yale.

Your CV is limited to 3 pages. Lead with impact — roles, results, scale. Show evidence of achievement, not adjectives.

Pick recommenders who know your work closely — a detailed letter from a supervisor beats a vague one from a famous name.

For the video, speak plainly and look at the camera. No TOEFL or IELTS is required, but you must be genuinely fluent — able to read complex texts and present to large audiences in English.

Rules that are easy to miss

The program does not prescreen candidates, so do not email asking whether you are competitive — they cannot answer.

You may reapply in a later cycle, but everything must be fresh — new CV, new recommendations, new statement. Nothing carries over.

No individual feedback is given to rejected applicants — with thousands of applications, they cannot.

Final decisions go to all applicants by email by the end of April. Your status will not be shared before then.
